if you like bible/egypt history read this

the book gets into different things that could explain the old testament supernatural happenings and possible mistakes in the translations of egyptian writings.that the hebrews were at first invaders of upper egypt and had their own short lived dynasty which led to civil war,then agreed to move out of the land.and that at the same time the volcano- mt.thera,in the greek islands area exploded causing darkness,famine,freak storms and alot of ash fallout.the author's research is good and he finds alot of new science studies that back the volcano, and archeology proofs that the hebrews were not as they appeared in the traditional old testament.if your into this stuff it's worth getting.i say this from some knowledge on the issue.i have read many books on the history of the bible,including some very controversial fringe stuff.enjoy!!!

Tempest to Exodus

Another great story with a modern translation, correctly done, if I may so state, to interpret the various Egyptian pictorial writings as presented in a historical, one by one fashion. Thera, Mt Sinai (the Great Pyramid), the Ark, Exodus, etc. all pinpointed with such
pictorial displays and new, corrected translation of various words. There is no doubt left as to how history was subtlety altered or certain misread. Ellis again does a masterful job and pits this latest version of events squarely against other recent authors books and explanations. I am greatly impressed by actually viewing each pictorial into its 'proper' translation. The finale of the secret name and meaning of GOD is what I've been looking for a long time. There is also a great comparison of the two antagonists of Upper vs Lower Egypt realms and who was who here (the south vs the north,if you will). The Hyksos are included in his analysis, also.
A must read for everyone.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

Garth Williams's classic illustrations for the Little House books caused Laura to remark that she "and her folks live again in these pictures." Garth Williams also illustrated Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and almost one hundred other books.

This account of life on a claim in the South Dakota prairie in the mid 1880s was written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. In the book, she tells of her teenage years as she grew from a child to a young lady, and from teacher to wife. The reader learns much about the hard times and the good family life that carries them on.
When she started teaching in the one room school, some of her pupils were older than her, so she has a struggle teaching and keeping discipline. As the school was several miles from her home, she had to live with the family of the school board and his bitter wife, who wanted to go back east. She is glad when Almanzo Wilder takes her home each weekend in the cold winter afternoons. After the two months teaching, she contributed the $40 she earned to her family to keep her blind sister, Mary, in college.
Eventually, at the age of 18, she marries Almanzo Wilder, who is about 10 years older that her.
This a good story of life on the Dakota prairies, the hardships, and the determination of the few settlers to survive on their claims. I would recommend this book to others.

These Happy Golden Years is the final (8th) book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series. It won the Newbery Honor in 1944. These Happy Golden Years tells the story of Laura's first time away from her family, at age 15, teaching school in a claim shanty 12 miles from home. Boy, 12 miles was a world away in those horse and buggy days! In These Happy Golden Years Laura learns to manage a classroom and deal with unruly students, experiences severe homesickness, delights in vacation time at home and matures into a kind, caring, thoughtful young woman. This story wraps up the Little House series with the lovely, gently romantic transition of Laura and Almanzo's friendship into love, courtship and marriage. It's a treasure.

We love these audiobooks

We love these audiobooks. The CD makes for a great car ride. All the children ages 3-12 love it as well as the adults. It took some getting used to Cherry Jone's voice but after listening to all kinds of audiobooks I find that it takes getting used to anyone's voice. All the books in the series are great, but I will say the last one is shorter which was disappointing though it couldn't be helped. It is also more serious in nature so it might be better to know what you are going to hear before giving to your kiddos. Still would recommend them all. This one still gives me chillbumps.

Extremely handy size and excellent depth

I studied French in high school 30+ years ago and hated it. Then I took four semesters in a community college 20 years ago (after learning Spanish) and loved it, but had little use for the language in any daily use. However, in planning to spend a month in France next year, I decided that I should study French again. This dictionary has been a wonderful aid in my studies. Although there are better, more expensive dictionaries (I personally own Petit Larousse Illustre and Harper Collins French College Dictionary), this one has an amazing amount of information and is so small and light that it can be easily referenced where a large bulky dictionary will be left on the shelf as an impediment to reading.

To resume learning French, I am reading Harry Potter A L'Ecole Des Sorciers (the Sorcerer's Stone book) and this dictionary is always at hand. The dictionary includes a surprising number of idiomatic phrases, a handy verb conjugation section, pronunciation and grammar sections. It is also handy that it includes words such as "eu", which is the past participle for avoir, and references one back to the infinitive form of the verb -- very useful when one hasn't yet mastered the past participles that are essential to the passe compose (a common past tense).

For just a few bucks, this is an amazing trove of information.

Great value for students

This dictionary goes both ways, French to English and English to French. The dimensions are 7" x 4" x 1.5", fairly compact and light, and easy to carry in a backpack. My daughter is taking French, and she's found this a perfect companion for her.

Can't recommend it strongly enough

I bought this book for my French class in college. I can't recommend it strongly enough! If you are taking French in high school or college, be sure to get this book; it has helped me tremendously. The only thing I regret about buying this book is that I didn't do it sooner.

One really nice feature that this book has (this feature being one of the reasons I bought it in the first place) is their use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for each word. For those who don't know what that is, that is THE standard way of representing sounds, particularly between languages. Each symbol corresponds exactly to one sound, regardless of what language is being spoken. If you know IPA, that is a TREMENDOUSLY useful feature of this dictionary. If you don't know IPA, I'd recommend learning it, it's not that hard to do (I think they even have an IPA guide in the dictionary) and you won't regret it.

This dictionary is very well done. Its definitions are clear and concise and it gives good examples of actual usage.

Wonderful calendar!

2nd year in a row I bought this calendar and love it. The format is the same as last year's calendar, except with new/different pictures for 2016, so I am repeating my review here: "Great calendar and format, and the pictures are charming. Just want to jump in every picture. I appreciate that there is a new illustration for every week. Vivid colors and quality paper. Layout with illustration and note space on left, weekly grid on right Monday - Sunday (Sat and Sun grouped together thankfully). Lots of space to write in the weekly grid. Ample space for notes in the back. Full yearly calendar in front, plus 2014 and 2016 in back for reference. Opens flat. Big, clear fonts. Just perfect. I buy engagement calendars every year and am so glad I tried this one! Will be buying more for gifts. Have previously purchased Simplicity, Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, Reading Woman, Japanese Woodblock in other years, and this year's Country Seasons is one my favs. I hope Andrews McMeel Publishing keeps making this one - it's a real winner." Thank you to the publisher for bringing this back again this year. I will buy it every year if you keep publishing it!

I love this calendar

I love this calendar! I purchased the Debbie Mumm engagement calendar for years and years, but they were discontinued a few years back. So I went looking for something else this year and found John Sloane. The pictures are beautiful, the pages are nice and thick and durable. I wish that I had discovered John Sloane and his engagement calendars years ago!

Great all-ages book!

A great book for both adults and kids alike. There aren't many kid-safe choices out there, and this book delivers wonderful, colorful stories that also highlight important issues for kids like self-confidence, friendship, inclusion and even bullying. Oh and Boo is just the cutest lil' guy ever.

A Great All Ages Book--and probably cheaper here than in stores...

I did like this book, like other books this one had pages and covers both a front and a back, the pages turned how I expected them too, but let me tell you more about this book and my experience with it...
What is there to write about Welcome to Showside that hasn't been written before, well I will tell you what, I used to be an absolute loser, but after I picked up and hadn't even opened it all of my dreams began to come true. First the stock tip my broker made actually started raising so many points I had to quit my job--this turns out to be a mixed blessing because now with all the money I could ever want and no day job I could finally chase my dreams--remember that thing I mentioned a minute ago--how all of them began to come true, well I could finally chase my dream of becoming a BigFoot Hunter. The first few days of BigFoot hunting I began to miss my family something fierce--thats when I remember I could forget about them if I could just read something great, thats when I remembered my copy of Welcome to Showside by Ian McGinty. Man the book had everything I was looking for Story, Art, love from a family that might never know me again, as Im turned the first page that is when the BigFoot lunged from behind the fence I was leaning against fully immersed in my comic, well just before ol' Bigfoot ate me he caught a glimpse of the book and sat down and read a little with me--we laughed and laughed, he told me about the video on youtube which I will link here: [...] We watched it together and it was then that I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him--Now BigFoot and I am roaming the countryside, maybe you have seen us as we hitch a ride on the wind and you feel a cool breeze on your neck in the evening dew. We have been there the whole time enjoying this all ages smorgasbord of pictures and words being thoroughly entertained by this story teller of McGinty Goodness.

A heart wrenching and beautiful story...

When Martin Pistorius was 12 years old, he came home from school with a sore throat. Over the next two years, his mind and body shut down, until he was left a quadriplegic who could not speak. Then, around the time he was 16, his mind started coming back to life. He tells his story in the book, Ghost Boy.

As Martin becomes more aware, he realizes that he has little to no control over his limbs and that he has no voice. All he can do is smile and move his eyes and head. He tries to use these signals to let everyone around him know that he is conscious and aware, but, as he states in the book, "They'd been told long ago that I was severely brain damaged, so when the young man with stick-like limbs, empty eyes, and drool running down his chin occasionally lifted his head, that's what they saw."

Martin spends the next decade in his unresponsive body, without a working voice. His days are spent at a day care facility while his parents work, but his father picks him up every evening to take him home to the family. His mind is active, and he spends much of his time developing elaborate fantasies to escape the horror of being trapped inside his own body; it's the only way he keeps from going mad.

Then a new caretaker enters his life and has a hunch that Martin is aware. She convinces others around her, and they take him to be evaluated for an alternative communication device. He passes the evaluation, and a new life is opened for him.

Martin speaks of his faith in God; that while he couldn't explain it, he knew that God was with him and he wasn't alone. His courage and strength is inspiring, as is the love of his father and mother and the woman he ends up marrying. I couldn't put the book down. Ghost Boy is an book of amazing perseverance through the most horrific trials one could imagine, and it's definitely worth your time to check out this true story.

Amazing Mental Strength and Courage

At first glance one would think this was a one-dimensional tale of a boy who had been silenced learning to find his voice once again. But this book is so much more. By the end, we weep when he weeps and leap for joy when he does. We feel the love he has for his family and friends, and feel as though we have taken the long journey from darkness into the light with him. This is an excellent, must read book. Martin has a beautiful voice, and I thank him for taking is along on his journey.

Life-changing Book

So many books are so poorly written that reading them is drudgery for me. I'm an avid reader, but I find myself putting quite a few books back on the shelf after the first few chapters. Mr. Pastorius grabbed my attention on page one and kept it through the acknowledgements at the end. I still can't stop thinking about him. I've been an RN for many years. This book made me question my attitude toward many patients who've been in my care. I'm kind and compassionate, for sure, but could I have missed something with some of my most debilitated patients? For at least one of them was there a keen intellect, hidden by a silent, twisted body? This book makes me wonder.

Strumpf has been fielding calls on the National Grammar Hot Line for more than 25 years, telling callers how to make their subjects agree with their verbs and tell the difference between "who" and "whom." Thus many of the examples in this thick but highly readable grammar handbook come from questions—sometimes rather charming ones—posed by callers. With the help of editor and writer Douglas, Strumpf guides the grammar-challenged reader through the parts of speech, then demonstrates how to dissect sentences, from the simplest to the most complex. His clear-cut guidelines offer some flexibility: he grants permission to end sentences with prepositions and to use the passive voice. On other points, however, like the ban on split infinitives, the rules remain intractable. Fellow grammarians will find much to argue with, from Strumpf's insistence on the interchangeability of "that" and "which" to the use of abbreviations in print. It's easy to sympathize with the idea that network broadcasters should be required to observe the rules of good grammar, but some of his pet peeves, such as overused adjectives and vulgar interjections, seem just, well, peevish. Though it will almost certainly be overshadowed by the buzz-carrying Eats, Shoots & Leaves, Strumpf's handbook does convey the basics of grammar well enough to be of great use to any casual writer.

About the Author

Michael Strumpf organized the National Grammar Hot Line while a professor of English at Moorpark College. He has appeared on Oprah and Today and serves as grammatical consultant to major corporations and governmental bodies.

Auriel Douglas is an editor and writer whose work has appeared in many national publications. Her books include The History of the Academy Award Winners and The Dictionary of Eponyms.

Excellent and enjoyable resource!

Excellent grammar book! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants more detailed information and the bigger picture about American English. I especially like the way this book and its chapters are organized. Also, the writers never assume that a question is stupid, and the tone that is used throughout the entire book creates only a positive experience for readers. Also, clearly written and easy to understand, this book has a lot of topics that I haven't seen in others. I especially learned a lot more about using the correct case with abbreviated clauses. I also gleaned some more insight about various vocabulary rules (i.e, such as the confused suffixes -able and -ible) and word pairs that I never knew had different definitions (i.e. attorney versus lawyer), and some interesting cases of "eponyms." Even more, the writers are informative and unpretentious. They also provide unusual facts about some words, as well as some historical information about the English language, which I found enjoyable. I could go on and on with only praise for this book. I jotted down a lot of notes while reading it because of its simple, yet detailed and engaging style. The detailed explanations the authors employ were far more understandable and engaging for me than many other grammar books that I've read recently. I read every page. Whether you already know a lot about grammar or are new to some of the technicalities and confusing exceptions to the grammar rules that go hand-in-hand with the English language, I hope you enjoy it as much as I.

The best grammar book you will ever own - for both native and non-native speakers

As a writer and an ESL teacher, I am always looking for great books on English grammar.

With this book, I have found that. And more.

This book is the most thorough book on English grammar I have ever found. It also includes the most accurate English usage. One might expect all grammar books to include only the 'most accurate English usage', but this is not true. I have other grammar books that include only 'common parlance' and not the 'strictly correct' usage.

Students need to know both - what is correct and what people actually use.

For writers, teachers and interested persons whose native language is English, this book is invaluable - meaning, that its personal value for me is so high I cannot put a price on it. The value of this book extends way beyond its book price. It is a book you will want to keep for years.

In fact, this is the first grammar book I have purchased since college, (a 'few' years ago).

For ESL students (such as those I personally teach), this book is helpful because it is the most thorough reference they will ever need.

I mention ESL students but I want to add a caveat.

A beginner ESL student may find this book too thorough for their current needs. However, a student who is returning to ESL studies OR a student who is a very quick learner OR who has academic English in mind, will find this book a MUST HAVE.

Language is the key to everything

I read something years ago to the effect that "When a nation begins its decline, language is the first thing to go.". I always use grammar as a litmus test for determining the slower-thinking people. Those who pick up buzzwords and use too much doublespeak are the slower-witted. Then I know how to deal with that person.
This book is very helpful in avoiding errors as best I can. Also, language appreciation is required to enjoy good jokes and once again, the lack of understanding of the fine points of jokes also indicates the slower wit.
