From Booklist
Bombing of the Ploiesti, Romania, oil refineries, a key German resource, started in 1942. Allied pilots sustaining damage frequently bailed out over Serbia in German-occupied Yugoslavia, where the resistance and others hid them. By 1944, more than 500 were stranded and slowly starving. The OSS concocted the daring Operation Halyard to airlift them, but they had to construct a landing strip without tools and without alerting the Germans or endangering local villagers, and then the rescuers had to avoid being shot down themselves. The operation's story is an exciting tale, but it was kept from general knowledge for decades; the resistance leader most responsible was a rival to Tito. Nazi-baited by a Stalinist mole in British intelligence, he was executed in 1946 with the consent of Britain and America, which thereafter refused to acknowledge having been snookered (the State Department kept many details classified more than 50 years). Evoking the rescuees' successive desperation, wild hope, and joy, and their gratitude to the Serbians who risked their lives to help, Freeman produces a breathtaking popular account. Murray, Frieda

Review
"The daring rescue effort to save hundreds of downed airmen in dangerous enemy territory is an amazing but unknown WWII adventure story. Told in riveting detail for the first time, The Forgotten 500 is a tale of unsung heroes who went above and beyond." -- James Bradley, #1 "New York Times" Bestselling Author of "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Flyboys" "Gregory A. Freeman has written a riveting account of the greatest escape during World War II. It is a remarkable adventure story of courage and daring that is superbly told." -- Tony Zinni, General, USMC (Ret.) "Gregory A. Freeman's "The Forgotten 500" is a literary and journalistic achievement of the highest order, a book that illuminates, thrills, and reminds us that heroes sometimes do live among us. It will take your breath away." -- Gregg Olsen, "New York Times" Bestselling Author of "The Deep Dark: Disaster and Redemption in America's Richest Mining Town" "This is an exciting, powerful story of escape and rescue. It has been buried for too long..." -- Tony Koltz, "New York Times" Bestselling Author of "The Battle for Peace" "A gripping, true-life narrative of one of the most heroic and inspiring-but virtually unknown-military operations of World War II . . . Freeman chronicles it with a master's touch for detail. Although this book reads like a fast-paced novel, it is based on scores of probing interviews and meticulous archival research. "The Forgotten 500" is destined to become required reading for serious students of the Second World War." -- Malcolm McConnell, #1 New York Times Bestselling Coauthor of "American Soldier" "A breathtaking popular account." -- "Booklist"

Truthful and long overdue
By Arthur Jibilian
I am the radio operator, "Jibby" in this book. We owe a debt to Mihailovich and the Serbian people for saving so many American lives. The SERBIANS WERE THE ONLY ONES IN THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA THAT FED, SHELTERED, AND RISKED THEIR LIVES FOR THE AMERICANS. Mihailovich's abandonment by the Allies and subsequently being labeling a traitor was, in Winston Churchil's words, "...My greatest blunder in WWII..". I am proud of being a part of the Halyard Mission and, FINALLY, seeing the truth regarding Mihailovich's contributions in WWII being publicized. This book will go a long way in clearing his name.....and it is exciting, easy reading, and hard to put down once you start it.

A little-known story of a great WWII rescue
By Amazon Customer
"The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II", by Gregory A. Freeman, is an engaging story of which I was not familiar prior to reading this book. It is the story of the hundreds of airman who were shot down on missions over the oil refineries in Romania which the Germans were tremendously dependent upon during the war. Many of these airmen ended up in Yugoslavia, some were captured by the Germans, a few ended up with Tito's forces, but many more ended up with the Serbian Guerilla forces under the leadership of General Draza Mihailovich. Those lucky enough to be with Mihailovich found themselves engaged in one of the greatest allied force rescues behind enemy lines throughout the entire war. This was OPERATION HALYARD, and that is the primary story told in the book. However, many other stories are told as well: the escape from Nazi occupied Serbia, the employment into the newly established OSS, the story of Allied Airmen and their aircraft. One of the tragedies at the end of the story is the Allied support of Tito over Mihailovich due to the many Soviet sympathizers s in the OSS and among the British forces. Mihailovich ended up being executed by Tito after the war. All and all, this is a very good read. If you think you know all the major stories of WWII, try this read. It may surprise you.

On to Iraq
By M. L. Dominguez-Plaza
I have just passed the book, The Forgotten 500, on to my son in Iraq. What a terrific read and one I know that he and his fellow soldiers will enjoy. I cried, laughed and got very angery as I read this book. Those Airmen and the civilians who helped them return to their homes should never be forgotten. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in WWII history.

Review
"The text almost precisely covers the amount of material that a student can absorb while using technology resources that are the preferred method of teaching and learning for today's classroom."

"This textbook is excellent. Efficient, succinct, engaging, page-turning, comprehensive, not overwhelming, interdisciplinary, intellectually intriguing, enriching, down-to-earth ... and the list goes on."

"I really like this text. I think it is the best one I have used up to this point. The three major strengths are its brevity, appropriate level of material, and listening exercises. … The text is quite brief and does not go into nearly as much depth and detail as previous editions or other texts I have reviewed and/or used. This is very good for the level of students I teach. The listening exercises provide an opportunity for the students to become actively engaged and involved in the listening and learning process."

Brand new without all materials
By Sebastian Monte
The Digital Card that came with the book was for music download only not the actual code needed to access course materials. Charged $98 for a brand new book without the proper cards to access the course. The course code is another $98. What a waste.

The best basic review book I've used.
By John J. Bost
I've used this text book to hone and review my basic math skills. It happened to also be a good review and reference book for the GMAT exam if you have the extra time to study.
If you do all of the section excercise problems you can really become good at all of the individual topics.
It's also a good book if you're weak at certain basic math skills such as decimal conversion to fractions, square roots, reducing fractions, exponents and radicals, polynomials, solving quadtratic equations by factoring and other basics.

Everything You Need to Know For Everything Else
By Leo Volont
Thank God for this book! I had gotten it in a University book store only because it had a chapter on Geometry which I wanted to take a look at later after I studied Algebra for a bit. I thought I had had Algebra covered because I had also bought "Algebra Form and Function" (McCallum Connally Hughes-Hattett), but when I began to go through "Algebra Form and Function" almost from the first page I was hanging up on the examples and getting things wrong. Just process stuff was screwing me up -- rules for this and that... just process techniques that They assumed everyone already knows (but I wonder why they think they need to write a book for students whom they assume already know everything!?). Anyway, I went to my shopping bag and dug out Developmental Mathematics 4th Edition (Johnston Willis Hughes) and it was so explanatory, it was wonderful. The Book seems to start with the Assumption that the Student never even met his first Number! It goes all the way to the Beginning. Yes, add and subtract! No! Read It! you think you already know all the beginning stuff from Grade School, but, honestly, there are Tricks to Everything that your grade school teachers thought were unnecessary or over your head. For instance, Who Knew there was a thing called 'Short' Division!? Really, it pays off to just take this entire book for its Ride, and to see where it takes you.

It is compartmentalized very well. You will get a few pages of explanation and example and then practice problems (with the answers to the Odd ones in the back, but for chapter review problems, all answers in the back), And some of the more important Explanations are not just given once, but every time a troublesome skill is required by another more advanced Skill Set, the Explanation is given again, as well as repeating pointers as to the Common Mistakes People Make. As I went through the book, if I found myself slowing down or making mistakes because of some failure in understanding of a previously learned Skill Set, well, I just went back and reviewed and did all the Problems again, then back to where I was, sharp and ready to move forward again (I went back to Factoring and Complex Fractions, for practice, a few times; and I went back and did the Word Problems from each Section again just for the fun of it). Not Once did I have to run to the Computer to Search Up some Mystery Problem. This Book was the answer to Everything!

I spent about a month with the book... about 8 hours a day, and as I approached the end, I was simply amazed at myself -- I had this big White Board with Dry Erase Markers and I was dashing off huge complex calculations with a big silly grin on my face. My doing that kind of Math was like Magic for me.

I finished the book and went back to "Algebra Form and Function" (McCallum Connally Hughes-Hattett) and, well, guess what? I now see everything that was tripping me up before.

This Book, Developmental Mathematics 4th Edition (Johnston Willis Hughes), will give you the strong foundation you need to go onto more advanced math, and those Books that assume that you know everything already... well after THIS book, there is A LOT that you already will know! And, mysteriously for a Math Book, it was a whole lot of Fun!

Superb Overview of Bird Biology and Species Occurring Worldwide
By Juscz
Produced in collaboration with Audubon, "Bird: The Definitive Visual Guide" (2007 by DK Publishing) deserves the highest praise for its superb presentation of birds worldwide. Containing a wide variety of representative species, excellent photographs, and a CD featuring some 60 bird songs from around the globe, this is perhaps the best general survey book available on the Class Aves.

The book consists of three chapters and the bird song CD. Whereas chapters two (nonpasserines) and three (passerines) provide basic and interesting information on the biology and geographic occurrence of selected birds representing specific bird orders and/or families, the first chapter touches on more general topics such as form, function, behavior, conservation, extinction, habitats, and ecology.

The Foreword consists of a brief, one page philosophical reflection on the significance of birds in our lives and is followed by 14 full-page images of such species as the African jacana, the European bee-eater, and the great grey owl. As is the case throughout the book, all of these images are in full color and of very high quality.

The Introduction begins with an examination of bird anatomy and physiology. Those individuals less familiar with these topics will find the explanations to be very clear and accessible. At the same time, the specialist will likely appreciate being reminded of how these topics can be distilled to a rather simplified yet informative presentation. For example, in its brief description of respiration, the text states,

"When a mammal breathes, air flows into its lungs and back out again. Bird lungs work differently: air flows straight through the lungs, via a system of air sacs, before being exhaled. This one-way flow allows air and blood to move in opposite directions, known as countercurrent."

The accompanying diagrams very effectively explain how a bird's lungs function in this manner. The reader will continue to encounter similar, high quality explanations throughout the text.

A representative bird skeleton enables us to understand how this structure keeps a bird's weight to a minimum while simultaneously standing up to the rigors imposed by powerful flight muscles. In addition, the explanation of flight forces, speeds, and patterns (pages 32 and 33) is also informative yet concise.

The introduction goes on to clearly describe general avian characteristics such as feather structure, wing structure, gliding and soaring, legs and feet, bills, mechanisms of feeding, communication, defense, breeding, nests and eggs, parental care, living together, migration, threats, conservation, and extinction. Again, one has to admire the manner in which these topics are effectively explained (excellent text and diagrams/photographs) such that the amateur bird enthusiast, perhaps lacking much in the way of formal biological training, can rapidly be brought "up to speed" on the essentials. But, again, professional biologists should also find the explanations very useful as well.

Chapter 1 continues with an examination of bird habitats (28 pages in all being used to cover this topic). A sound explanation of the 8 different recognized biogeographical realms is a notable feature. The significance of continental drift is also considered with respect to the worldwide distribution of ratites (i.e., birds such as ostriches, emus, and rheas). Curious asides such as this abound and add to our fascination for the Class Aves.

Chapter 2 begins with a general overview of nonpasserine bird species and the criteria used for their classification. We then launch into the various orders and families comprising this very broad Avian group. For example, early in this chapter the two species of kiwis are shown side by side. Their geographic ranges are each indicated with a useful accompanying map (these are used throughout the book for each species presented). Important information, such as size, weight, migratory status, nesting, behavior, and species status (e.g., threatened or endangered), are presented as well. Did you know that kiwis are monogamous and, despite their harmless appearance, are perfectly capable of inflicting serious wounds to rivals? Very interesting, indeed.

The parrots (a personal favorite group of mine) consist of some 350 or so species and there is no practical way by which a book of this sort can begin to cover every species. Thus, as in all such cases throughout the work, the authors/editors opt to present some of the most representative species (such as African greys [curiously spelled "grays," rather than the traditional British "grey" spelling], blue and gold macaws, budgerigars, and monk parakeets) while also emphasizing some more unusual species with which the average person might be unfamiliar. In this latter category, the New Zealand Kakapo, a ground dweller and the heaviest parrot in the world, is given a deservedly generous presentation. It is noted how this unique species is being brought back from the brink of extinction through very special protective measures. This and similar such success stories add to our desire to continue bird conservation.

Chapter two provides informative introductions to cuckoos, owls, kingfishers, woodpeckers, toucans, hawks/eagles/falcons, and other such nonpasserines. Very good species representatives are included for each group (though I must confess I did miss seeing the black-and-white-casqued hornbill in the hornbill portion of this chapter... but the authors/editors had to draw the line somewhere).

Chapter three deals with the passerines. After a general introduction (including topics such as anatomy, plumage, bills, nesting/parenting, songs, courtship, and socialization), the species within the Order are examined. Thus we meet the thrushes, wrens, warblers, orioles, flycathchers, ovenbirds, etc., all divided amongst two suborders, the Suboscines and Oscines. While the treatment of passerines is, again, excellent and on-par with the rest of the book, I found the sunbirds section to be especially intriguing. Occurring in parts of Asia and Africa, this group appears to fill the niche that in the New World is occupied by the hummingbirds.

This is not the sort of book one would want to take into the field. It is much too large and heavy for that and it generally does not contain enough species representatives of particular Orders and/or Families to be consistently useful in the manner of a species identification manual. It is rather an excellent general reference manual.

In addition, it should be said that the pages can look a bit crammed with information, both photographic and written. I see this as an asset as it seems there are always at least a few new and interesting avian topics to discover whenever one opens this book.

For those seeking a broad overview of bird biology and an excellent presentation of many of the most representative species (with excellent photographs/illustrations and textual information throughout), look no further. This volume easily earns a five star rating.

Love ALL of My DK Books!
By C. L. Wms
The books that DK (Dorling Kindersley) publishes are always marvelous feasts for the eye. They're the sort of volumes that my little town's library never allowed anyone to check out when I was growing up. Large, heavy, high-quality books filled with pictures could only be read by the patrons while in the library! So as a middle-aged adult I find it a special treat to actually be able to own such books. And they would make great "coffee table" volumes, if you don't have a cat who damages them like my cat does when they're left lying out! Otherwise I recommend leaving them out to be handy for browsing through the beautiful pictures and reading bits here and there whenever you have a little time, and the books will fascinate children, as well. As for this particular title, 'BIRD: The Definitive Visual Guide' is not a birding guidebook, nor is it a comprehensive, in-depth study of one species or of one country's birds. Rather, it's a broad overview of birds in general, with many, many examples and fine photos, plus more information. Each and every page is jam-packed and in color. How could anyone fail to love this book if he or she has any appreciation at all for birds? Oh, and it bears the name Audubon, too, so that's another indicator of an excellent book about birds.

Fantastic Illustrated Guide to Birds
By Katherine Chan
I got this book for my 4 year old daughter who is going through a big "bird phase" in her life. All types of birds seem to fascinate her, and seeing an educational opportunity, we got this book for her for Christmas. This was a great book to get her. The photographs are stunning, the information is sound, and with a poster and a clip art CD included, there's a lot of reasons for her to go through this book over and over again.

Because this book is geared towards older children, the information given is very detailed - something both my kids love. They are learning so many random facts about birds, and really enjoy the intricacies about birds that you simply couldn't get from just watching a tv program about them or through observation alone. The kids were particularly interested in the bone and muscle structure of birds - they really are amazing creatures.

For any bird lover in your life, this book would be a great gift. Highly recommended!

Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food, by Catherine Shanahan MD, Luke Shanahan MFA

Deep Nutrition illustrates how our ancestors used nourishment to sculpt their anatomy, engineering bodies of extraordinary health and beauty. The length of our limbs, the shape of our eyes, and the proper function of our organs are all gifts of our ancestor's collective culinary wisdom. Citing the foods of traditional cultures from the Ancient Egyptians and the Maasai to the Japanese and the French, the Shanahans identify four food categories all the world's healthiest diets have in common, the Four Pillars of World Cuisine. Using the latest research in physiology and genetics, Dr. Shanahan explains why your family's health depends on eating these foods. In a world of competing nutritional ideologies, Deep Nutrition gives us the full picture, empowering us to take control of our destiny in ways we might never have imagined.

Deep Nutrition is an approved textbook for these health professionals and can be purchased using CEU monies. See the Numedix website for more information.

From the Author
One of our favorite passages in the book speaks to the importance of our ability to gauge beauty. Contrary to what we typically hear, the fascination for good-looking people is not a new phenomenon created by Hollywood. Nor is it about vanity. Rather, the instinct for beauty reflects a deep-seated, primal survival skill that has enabled us to reliably select the healthiest mates and pass on the healthiest genes to our offspring.

Unfortunately, the introduction of industrial food into our bodies has also impacted our genetic expression and, for reasons described in Chapters Two and Three, this means that optimal growth is now relatively more rare and precious than it was in the past.

Once we better appreciate how wandering from our ancestral nutritional path can affect us so powerfully, we can better appreciate the power of real food to set our bodies back on track.

About the Author
Cate Shanahan, MD is a leading authority on nutrition. Trained in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell, Dr. Cate has two decades of experience examining the effects of food choices on a person's metabolism, brain health, immune and reproductive systems and skeletal and muscle development.

While living in Hawaii, she found that older patients tended to be the healthiest in their family. Unlike their descendants, they were raised on traditional foods, typically endowed with strong joints and sturdy bones, and relatively few needed glasses or braces as children. Dr. Cate now helps patients obtain those same kinds of foods in order to repair damaged metabolic pathways and optimize gene expression.

Luke Shanahan, MFA graduated from University of Iowa where he attended the prestigious Writers' Workshop as an undergrad. Since graduate school, he has taught and lectured around the country and continued to pursue his interests in literature, art, and science.

The couple designed the Los Angeles Lakers new diet, and, for the benefit of adults and children everywhere, hope to make well-sourced foods a bigger part of sports-coolness than sugary drinks.

Powerful and Deep Nutrition
By docfor ME
I just finished reading Deep Nutrition, Twice.

As a cardiologist, the first time I read it was to see what was in there. I found it to be very interesting. She gets down to the facts quite well. At the same time, I found a fascinating presentation of nutrition, genetics, anthropology, history, medicine, metabolism, and cooking. It is a book that I can refer to my patients as a resource, and to colleagues as a reference.

The second time I read it was right after the first. I realized that there was so much information in there,so "nutrient dense", that I had to read it again to really "consume and digest" (parden the puns, but no other way to say it) the wealth of information.

I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in food, nutrition, or metabolism, and in fact I recommend it to anyone who consumes food and nutrition, that is, anyone who can read and has a life. You will be thankful that you invested the time to read it.

Good, but not Great. Falls short of Weston A Price principles
By Idle Wild
I really, really thought I would love this book. I had been wanting to buy it for a year or so and finally when I found out I was pregnant (with #3) I had the justification I needed to go ahead :)

I was unsure of whether to give this book 4 or 3 stars...I still would recommend it, just with some reservations.

Shanahan does a good job of explaining why and how sugar/HFCS is so terrible for us. Good knowledge to keep in mind whenever the cravings hit. the biochemical chaos that ensues from eating very much of these foods is down right scary.

She also does a good job of explaining why and how transfat and industrial seed oils (canola, soy, corn, etc) are the real big kahuna of unhealthy foods; she follows up with why traditional fats like butter, coconut oil, EVOO are beneficial. this is something I already took to heart (no pun intended!) and I think she did a pretty good job of illustrating this point.

She has a very good chapter on collagen formation, which I learned a lot from.

Shanahan's writing style flows off the pen like honey- it sounds sweet and enticing and is easy to swallow. Unfortunately, I also found this to be a pitfall. Sometimes the words come too easy, and I think she gets ahead of herself and doesn't back herself up enough.

The field of epigenetics is revolutionary and has important implications for our lifestyle choices. But it will not "change your genes" as she often blurts out- it will change how your genes express. Of course a traditional diet is not going to turn you into claudia schiffer or michael jordan unless you started out with that genetic blueprint. Though Shanahan implies this throughout the book, I think she gets a bit overexcited and overstates herself. She also promises that by following a traditional diet, you can overcome genetic shortcomings and have a perfect baby- one who turns heads and engenders envy in the sports arena. Well, maybe- big maybe. Lets say your parents ate a typical standard american diet, and you bore the brunt of that with less than ideal physical proportions- slightly crowded teeth, underdeveloped cheekbones, thin upper lip, and you didn't get much taller than them. But lets say that your grandparents and ancestors before all followed a very rich traditional diet- so you are only one generation away from what that inferred. Get yourself and your partner back on track months or years before conception, you may very well have a baby that is more well developed, very beautiful and athletic, vigorous. But as Francis Pottenger discovered (whom Shanahan refers to, but misses the point), one generation of dietary shortcomings can (unfortunately) take multiple generations of correct diet to recover. Now lets say not only your parents but your grandparents as well ate a typical modern diet, lacking in those essential fat soluble vitamins needed for proper development and genotype. You may or may not be able to overcome that with a few months of extremely careful diet and supplementation and produce as Shanahan promises a perfect baby. I don't mean to sound like Debbie Downer- I face these facts myself, especially as a parent. I am trying my hardest, but I don't get bogged down in how perfect my children look or otherwise turn out. Of course, like any parent, I just want my children to be healthy and happy. But I do have some qualms that Shanahan gets ahead of herself and makes false promises and exagerrated claims about a traditional diet. Of course it is critical to follow a diet like this during childbearing years- just don't think it will guarantee you a supermodel or professional athlete for a child. Of course I don't think many of us do, but Shanahan leads us to believe we could.

Another problem I have is that Shanahan really misses the boat on what Weston A Price established in his research, which is that the fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) found in animal foods are essential for carrying on the proper genetic material. Shanahan rightly points out how proper diet ensures the ideal proportions and symmetry to give your child a beautiful face, but does not even mention that it is vitamin A (true vitamin A, not beta carotene) that makes this possible. I am really scratching my head as to how she could leave this crucial information out. Instead she falls back on recommending a synthetic prenatal to most of her patients, but does not seem to understand that the real importance to pregnant women, esp before conception, is these fat soluble vitamins. She recommends cod liver oil, because of the omega 3's- traditional (fermented) cod liver oil is rich in fat soluble vitamins which is what makes is a super food, not the omega 3's. Vitamins A, D, K found in pastured animal products or wild seafood, are absolutely essential to proper cellular division in the beginning of pregnancy (otherwise you will have a miscarriage because the cells did not differentiate)and also to the organs and other body parts forming, to bone structure which includes not only facial symmetry but stature and pelvic opening- so important for women to bear children, brain and nervous system development, on and on. I am just really dumbfounded how someone who studied Weston A Price could not include this info. Its like she got so caught up in facial symmetry and the plastic surgeon Dr. Marqhardt, that she stopped short of comprehending the actual cause of facial symmetry, good health and ideal genetic expression which has a very specific nutritional foundation: fat soluble vitamins and their co-factors found in animal foods.

Which brings me to another problem I had with this book. Shanahan seems so enamored of the plastic surgeon and his work, the beauty mask that describes perfect facial symmetry; this obsession overshadows the real pioneering work of Dr. Weston A Price. In the first chapter, she talks at length about the plastic surgeon, then briefy alludes to Weston A Price, and not even by name! This plastic surgeon's work has to do with how you can come to him so he will "fix" your face, what a contribution to society. Dr. Weston A Price's research has far reaching implications for ourselves and our future generations, for restoring our health and genetic potential through proper diet. Dr. Price's work is invaluable to us, it came at a critical time in history when he could study both traditional diets and those who switched to a modern diet. Nobody else has accomplished what he did. His work has true merit to all of civilization, not just Hollywood types who get plastic surgery. Why Shanahan relies so heavily upon photos of celebrities and their siblings, when she could have turned to Price's photos of families on traditional vs. modern diets also leaves me scratching my head. Price's photos give us a much clearer illustration of the destruction of modern diets, yet she would rather include pictures of Prince Harry and Prince William or Matt Dillon and his younger brother Kevin, with their minor "imperfections". She is stretching so far to prove her point, I feel she undoes some of it, unfortunately. Instead she should have relied on Weston A Price and his irrefutable, well researched work- which also would have led her to share the importance of fat soluble vitamins.

The dietary suggestions at the end of the book are incomprehensible. There are only 3 scant pages of suggestions, and many of them are not very good or downright contradict her previous advice. She extols the virtues of raw milk, but then at the end says it is okay to drink organic store bought milk. This milk is not only usually ultra-pastuerized (the worst kind), it is generally confinement fed holsteins eating organic corn/soy. A far cry from raw, grass fed, traditional breed dairy cow's milk. She also heartily recommends store bought organic butter (same issues) She tells us not to eat frozen food but readily recommends Ezekiel bread- which is sprouted but contains soy (she actually says whole soy can be part of a healthy diet). She tells us not to eat sugar, but then recommends yogurt with JAM for breakfast, oh yes, washed down with coffee. After her hard hammer on sugar, she recommends coffee, which can be just as damaging to the adrenals. Not to say I don't enjoy a nip of coffee here or there, but I don't recommend it as part of a healthy eating plan. Going on, even though she just told us sugar will surely kill us, you can have some homemade cookies and dark chocolate later in the day, even some wine. And even though her sugar chapter came down equally hard on starches, her diet plan is far from "low carb" or even moderately low carb, it is rife with suggestions to have homemade pizza, crepes, toast, toast, and more toast. Again, I am not saying I don't indulge in these things myself, but the fact that she includes them in her slim-to-none dietary recommendations is contradictory to say the least. How are those traditional? We all already eat things like that from time to time, so we don't need it to be recommended to us. What would actually be helpful is real traditional type food suggestions and maybe a handful of recipes (she gives 2 recipes, one for broth and one for liver). She also recommends lots of nut butter, including peanut butter, which I mostly avoid because of aflatoxin. Of course there is not mention if it is soaked (properly prepared) nut butters, she is recommending run of the mill "natural" nut butters. Oh! but not the ones with palm oil (she says they taste bad...?), which she previously assures us is a healthy fat, which only leaves nut butters made with CANOLA or SAFFLOWER OIL, the very industrial seed oils she tells us to eat under no circumstances. So at this point she has lost a lot of credibility with me. Or, it makes her more human, like me, she knows a lot about healthy eating but sometimes doesn't make the most ideal choices. But I did not write a book, and then at the end include my dietary compromises as if they are perfectly healthy. Overall, her "four pillars" and meal suggestions at the end of the book leave a lot to the imagination, which in this case is not a good thing! I can imagine a diet that might fall into her four pillars and her suggestions, but still be woefully inadequate in the fat soluble vitamins, proteins, and other co-factors necessary for the body to utilize those nutrients properly.

Either way, I can only recommend this book with reservations. I think Shanahan started out with great intentions, but did not follow through in all of her chapters. Some are very good and some are okay, but some left me scratching my head. I do think with a little more work and revision, this could be a 5 star book. But it has a ways to go.

If you are pretty new to traditional diets, this book is easy to read, even fun to read, and will probably give you lots of helpful information so you can take steps towards a traditional diet. If you are already into the traditional or primal type diet/lifestyle, this book will please you in some ways but probably let you down in others. Overall, I am glad I bought it because now I want to pick up a more thorough book on epigenetics. I also learned a few things, though many of the bases I already had covered. For the price, I am not sorry I bought it. Sometimes reading a book you can pick apart a bit helps establish where you do stand and what you do know. I really hope she comes out with a revised edition, or that her other book is much more solid, because I think Shanahan could be an important voice in the traditional foods movement. As good, not great, as this was, it just left a lot to be desired.

This Book Gets 10 Stars on a Scale of 5

Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food by Catherine and Luke Shanahan (she's an MD) is now in my own personal Top Ten books of all time. I could never say enough good things about this book; it's off the charts.

I'm a health nut from way back, always telling my friends the latest about Omega-3's, the horrors of trans-fats, the crucial need for Vitamin D and more. I learned most of it first from my sister, I admit, but I found Barry Sears by myself. My sis actually has a 1938 publication by Weston Price, and first got going with Adele Davis. I've read countless books, magazine articles, newsletters, and manuals trying to understand what's what. I'd trade all I've ever read about diet, nutrition, and health food for the book produced by Catherine and Luke Shanahan.

Regarding the massive amount of research these two have done, they have really sifted the chaff from the wheat. (Oh, but too bad about that metaphor, wheat is kind of on the outs now for me.) What we should be eating, and WHY, is what this book is all about. This narrative has unusual insights and connects things you would never expect to see in a book about nutrition. This book is so engaging and well written; you certainly come away with a bit of the personality of its authors (a couple of minor typos are not a problem for me, unlike the reviewer who gave it two stars).

Your paradigms will shift! You know sugar is a problem. How bad? Pretty bad. You need to know why. Catherine and Luke explain it is so well you will wonder why candy is ever allowed in schools. But cheer-up, nutrient rich foods are nothing if not delicious! The more flavor, the more nutrition. Rich cream is good for you, and butter! Who knew? Olive oil is still OK, but I did not know how much damage the canola, soy, sunflower, and other veggie oils where doing. I had no idea.

Vegans will have the biggest challenge in their path to health. Our bodies did not evolve eating soy and veggies alone. Soy has major issues, well explained here. I'm now eating liver and liking it (I am shocked, actually), making my own yogurt from raw milk and loving it (remembering trips to Greece), and learning to ferment veggies (delicious).

French cooks, Julie and Julia fans, rejoice. Those French sauces, creamy or made of stock from slow cooked bones, are not only yummy, but super healthy!

Young adults who are getting married and thinking about babies, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read this wonderful book before you conceive. There are way, way, too many unhealthy kids in the world. You want one that is as perfect as possible. Deep nutrition starts before conception.

Boomers....do you want to be in the joint replacement brigade, dealing with cancer or heart disease, forgetting stuff all the time? Of course not. READ THIS BOOK!!

Amazon readers are always told "If you liked this book, you will like _______" I didn't think it was possible to have another book out there as good as this one, but Nora Gedgaudas wrote one. Her book, Primal Body--Primal Mind: Empower Your Total Health The Way Evolution Intended, is one you probably should buy at the same time you order this one. These two books are joined at the hip. They fit together perfectly with minimal duplication. They both give jaw-dropping insights into who we are bio-chemically, and what we can do to survive in a world where profits drive food production and medical care.

If you don't have heath care (I mean sick care), BUY these books. You'll be fine, unless you are hit by a truck.

Fantastic Primer on Perspective Drawing.
By Jason Cox
This is a fantastic reference for anyone who desires to learn the basics of sketching in perspective. Perspective drawing is the key focus on this book, but it also does a good job at showing how perspective in your drawing compares to scenes in reality.

There are other books out there that teach things that are shown well in this book, but the thing that I think makes this one unique is that it brings so many different aspects of perspective, sketching, and object design together in one place. And while it doesn't include every technique available to a designer or artist, this explains a tremendous toolset that you'll be able to use (very quickly!) to produce most anything you can imagine. Isn't that the goal?

The quality of the book is fantastic (I got the "paperback" version) with some of the thickest paper of any book I own. Each page is in full color (most publishers would have cut corners as many of the images only include spots of color and the temptation to make it greyscale had to be high).

Also included is a link list to video lessons. There is an upcoming app that will allow you to scan images from many of the pages to trigger the videos, but it's not yet available on iOS or Google Play store (at least it didn't show up as linked from the QR code and separate searches). The link list works with your computer or a tablet. I'll update this review when the app becomes available.

If you are unfamiliar with Scott Robertson, I highly recommend searching for him in YouTube. I've been following him for years and have 7 of his drawing, rendering, and designing DVDs from the Gnomon workshop. This book and the videos is a nice companion to those, but much less expensive! (Those DVDs were $30 each). Even with that background, I'm very happy with Scott's latest book.

LOVE this book
By Stephen Glasgow
LOVE this book. I bought it because I wanted to expand on what Scott teaches in his videos, but when I got it I realized that it is more valuable than any book I got in college. The perspective lessons alone make it worth the price of admission so to speak. The other night I was trying to figure out a particularily complicated angle/foreshortening problem. After I was about ready to give up, I flipped through the book and used Scott's techniques to work it out. Can't recommend this enough. Anyone who wants to get better at technical drawing - sci-fi or otherwise - would do well to making this part of their reference library.

Wow, packed with information!
By Farious
When i first got it, i was shocked to see how thick it was. More pages than i thought, seems very thorough of the subject.
I skimmed through the pages, and boy you can tell so much effort is put into this.
It may be difficult to grasp, but you have to reread and take your time trying to understand - you will get it eventually.
The book have many sketches with guidelines, so you have to train yourself to be able to "read" what/how he did it (naturally as you read the book) in order to learn each lesson.
The most amazing aspect of the book is that some section of the book have a video to go with it (online url/link or through electronic scan with ipad or something). It will show and explain certain things much clearer, so i recommend you watch the videos as well.

I was skeptical about it being $34 (on sale too), but after seeing how much information it provides, it is certainly worth it.
Glad i bought the hardcover as well, this is a great entry in my collection of fundamental drawing books.
