useful symbols, informative booklet, quality red rubber

If you've been burned by worthless (low quality) rubberstamp sets sold by book publishers you're wise to be cynical when you see another set on the shelf. I took the plunge and bought this set at a local independent bookstore and was pleased with the quality of the red rubber and the images themselves. I also enjoyed the well-designed and colorful booklet that reveals the history of the symbols and what each symbol actually means. The box the stamps are packaged in is wood and begs to be stamped and colored. What fun! My only complaint is with the wooden mounts. The mounts are thin cheap wood (with extra-thick dense foam cushion) so don't expect beautiful thick maple wood mounts! Considering the price though and the number of images (31) this didn't really detract from my overall enjoyment and satisfaction so I will give it 5 stars.

not so great if you're looking for accuracy

As a person who spent over 2 years in Ghana and became pretty familiar with Adinkra symbols...I was disappointed with this stamp kit. I was excited when I saw this kit online but should have read the reviews before ordering as I see several other people felt let down too. I can hardly believe that the author left out the most well loved Adinkra symbol of all, "Gye Nyame", a symbol about the power of God. I really wish the author had put more effort into her research and included the names and accurate meanings of the symbols in the Twi language. Bummer.

Great Stamps

The rubber stamps are the real bargain here. As others have mentioned, the small booklet that comes with this set does not have much going for it. I also would have preferred to see the symbols identified with their African names. There are websites that go into more details about the symbols. People should not have much trouble finding them by searching "Adinkra" and "symbols."

How does it get any better than this..?

I have my own business and after reading this book and also listening to the audio book, my business i starting to do better. I understand my points of views better and see where I sometimes stagnate. Then I ask questions and suddenly there is a better flow in my business again.

The book is best understood if you are familiar with Access Conciousness. So if you don't know what that is - do some research :-) It will change your life!

Change Abounds

In The Joy of Business Simone presents a completely different possibility for doing business in this reality. She offers tools for change and different ways of thinking of things, in an easy to read format.

The first time I read this book I got a lot of information about a different way to look at doing business, it also exosed me to different points of view about what is possible for me to create and generate with business.

The second time I read this book I had awareness after awareness relating to many areas of my life (business, sex, relationship, money, success, perfectionism etc.) that as I address them, facilitate change and help me to create the life I truely desire to live.

I wonder what will show up the third time I read it?

This book isn't made up fluff or speculation, Simone writes from her own experiences in business and in life. Her desire to help people to achieve success in their business is palpable.

Great Historical Read

Had to get it for my Modern Britain class and I ended up doing much more reading than was assigned. Being a history buff I cannot get enough of this stuff but the book is so well written, and so well done that it just speaks for itself. Whether you need it for a class or just to do some history on 20th century Britain this is the book to see.

Useful studies in recent British history

Francesca Carnevali, of Birmingham University, and Julie-Marie Strange, of Manchester University, have edited this collection of 23 essays. Its contributors are mainly from British universities, although there are also historians from Canada, Australia, France and Ireland.

Part One, on the whole century, includes essays on the British economy; modernity and modernism; class and gender; Britain's changing position in the international economy; and war and national identity since 1914. Part Two studies themes pre-1945 - suffrage and citizenship; motoring and modernity; the First World War and its aftermath; depression and recovery; consumption, consumer credit and the diffusion of consumer durables; the role of the state: taxation, citizenship and welfare reforms; leisure; and youth.

Part Three examines themes post-1945 - managing the economy, managing the people; immigration, multiculturalism and racism; the retreat of the state in the 1980s and 1990s; trade unions' rise and decline; sexuality; poverty and social exclusion; religion and `secularization'; Britain and Europe; and education and opportunity.

The book includes some fascinating essays, but unfortunately nothing on engineering or science. The essays on our economy pre- and post-1945 are particularly useful. Christopher Price, Lecturer in Economic History at Liverpool University, shows how Britain's economy grew by 3% a year after we ended free trade in 1931 by introducing a 10% tariff (raised to 20% in 1932). Keynes had pointed out that monetary policy, for example cutting interest rates to zero, was useless in a slump. We needed to increase demand for goods and services, for instance by raising wages and investing in useful projects.

Jim Tomlinson, Professor of Modern History at Dundee University, writes, "In the 1950s ..., and for most of the 1960s, the balance of payments problem was not (as government propaganda suggested) that Britain could not sell enough abroad to pay for its imports at a full-employment level of output. Rather, the problem lay elsewhere, with the ambition of successive British governments to have a large enough surplus of exports over imports to finance the significant proportion of `defence' spending sent overseas, and in addition to allow large-scale overseas investment. It was these expenditures, plus the vulnerability of the pound to periodic crises of confidence, due to its role as an international currency, that led to the frequency of balance of payments crises. It was not, to repeat, mainly due to some fundamental problems in British international competitiveness." Then as now, overseas military spending, foreign investment and an overvalued pound harmed Britain's economy.

About the Author

Kristy K. Brock is an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan, where she received her Ph.D. in nuclear engineering and radiological sciences. She is a board member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the therapy science director for the 2013 AAPM 2013 annual meeting, an editorial board member of Medical Physics, and a diplomat in therapeutic radiological physics of the American Board of Radiology. Her research focuses on deformable registration for dose accumulation and adaptive radiotherapy, the application of biomechanical modeling in correlative pathology, and therapy response assessment.

As no dedicated course on image processing for radiation therapy typically exists, this book may very well help build the foundation for future educational initiatives in this important bridging area.... Clinical medical physicists will have a reference that provides some insight into segmentation, alignment, and adaptive therapy support tools that otherwise appear as "black box" algorithms, and can use this knowledge to make practical decisions about clinical assessment and use. Imaging scientists and students in imaging and/or radiation oncology physics can use many of the chapters to get a fundamental description of some of the critical elements of emerging methods to advance imaging use."
