When Ruth Ann (Roo) McCabe responds to a text message while she's driving, her life as she knows it ends. The car flips, and Roo winds up in a hospital bed, paralyzed. Silent. Everyone thinks she's in a coma, but Roo has locked-in syndrome -- she can see and hear and understand everything around her, but no one knows it. She's trapped inside her own body, screaming to be heard.

Mathilda (Tilly) is Roo's sister and best friend. She was the one who texted Roo and inadvertently caused the accident. Now, Tilly must grapple with her overwhelming guilt and her growing feelings for Roo's boyfriend, Newton -- the only other person who seems to get what Tilly is going through.

But Tilly might be the only person who can solve the mystery of her sister's condition -- who can see through Roo's silence to the truth underneath.

Somehow, through medicine or miracles, will both sisters find a way to heal?

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—This realistic, if a bit heavy-handed, emotional ride takes readers through two sisters' perspectives on a life-altering accident. Tilly and Roo, close friends as well as siblings, find their lives thrown upside down when Roo gets into a devastating car accident. She survives but goes into a coma and eventually suffers from locked-in syndrome—she can hear and see, but she just can't move. Everyone rallies around her, but Tilly, her younger sister, finds herself increasingly on the outside and increasingly attracted to Roo's boyfriend, Newton. Tilly's feelings of guilt multiply when everyone in school discovers that she was texting Roo at the time of the accident. Newton and Roo's relationship, while emotionally deep, remains modest, so middle schoolers would be quite comfortable with the romance here. The alternating chapters, from Tilly's and Roo's perspectives, add to the authenticity of the story; the emotions are genuine and heartfelt. The "don't text and drive" message is a little overdrawn, but readers will be engaged in the emotional and physical recoveries of both sisters. Fans of Gayle Forman's If I Stay (Dutton, 2009) will find another favorite in this. VERDICT A good purchase for libraries with teens craving realistic but not edgy fiction.—Lisa Ehrle, Falcon Creek Middle School, CO

Don't text while driving -- and don't SEND a text to someone who MIGHT be driving!
By Kathy Cunningham
Luanne Rice’s THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF SISTERS is both a scathing indictment of texting-while-driving and an uplifting tribute to the bond between sisters. Sixteen-year-old Roo McCabe is pretty much the perfect teenager – she’s gorgeous, popular, brilliant, and a genius with a camera. She’s on track to be high school valedictorian, followed by college at Yale and a limitless future. But when she makes the mistake of answering a text on an icy afternoon, she flips her car and ends up in a coma, perhaps lost forever. But is Roo really in a coma, or is her mind actually alert and aware, even if she’s unable to communicate that fact to the rest of the world?

On one level, this is a novel about the horrors that can result from reading and answering texts while driving. The text Roo answers comes from her fourteen-year-old sister Tilly, who she was late picking up. So there’s plenty of guilt to go around. Roo feels she destroyed her own life in those three seconds of stupidity, and Tilly believes it’s all her fault since if she hadn’t texted Roo, the accident would never have happened. And it’s all very gripping and real, and I’m sure Rice’s story will resonate with today’s teens, for whom texting has become a way of life. But is Tilly really responsible (even in part) for her sister’s decision to send that fatal text? I don’t think so. And Tilly’s guilt is central to Rice’s ultimate message.

The problem is, everyone sends texts these days – even my 89-year-old father texts – and every time we send a text, we have no clue what’s going on for the person we’re texting. Is she at a movie, in a restaurant, talking on the phone, or driving on an icy road? We don’t know. In the case of Rice’s novel, Tilly is texting Roo because she’s late picking her up. She assumes Roo is out taking photographs and has lost track of time (which is at least partly true). She also assumes that if Roo IS on the road, she won’t answer the text without pulling over. But by the midpoint in Rice’s novel, Tilly has become the focus of a concerted campaign against texting-while-driving, a campaign instigated by Tilly’s mom (who is horrified that her two daughters did this terrible thing) and carried out by the school and the media. Pictures of Tilly and Roo (including one horrific shot of Roo in the hospital just after the accident) are circulated on the Internet, in a school assembly, and in the newspapers and on TV. And not one person tells Tilly what I want to tell her – it’s NOT your fault that Roo answered your text while she was driving.

In the novel, several other people had texted Roo that same afternoon, including her best friend and her boyfriend. As luck would have it, Tilly’s text is the one that comes at the wrong time. Does that make Tilly more to blame than the others? No, of course not! I get that Tilly feels terrible about what happened (and it’s believable that she would feel guilty about sending that text), but if she’s to blame (even in part) for what happens to Roo, then none of us should EVER send texts . . . unless we are 100% certain that the person we’re texting isn’t engaged in some activity that would make reading or answering a text dangerous. And we just can’t know that. Ever.

Of course, there’s more to this novel than just its anti-texting message. Tilly has to figure out that Roo is conscious and can communicate, even if it appears she’s comatose. Roo has to come to terms with her disabilities and figure out a way to move forward with her life. And Tilly has to fight her growing feelings for Roo’s boyfriend, feelings that add to the guilt she’s already feeling and threaten to destroy her bond with her sister. But the central message in this novel is definitely about the dangers of texting. And that part didn’t work for me. I kept waiting for someone – anyone – to tell Tilly that the responsibility for what happened to Roo is Roo’s alone. Roo made the decision to read the text. Roo made the decision to answer the text, even as she navigated that icy road. Tilly is not to blame. But in this novel, she is. And that’s a message that just doesn’t work.

Overall, THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF SISTERS is a well-written and interesting novel about two very devoted sisters who are faced with a very difficult challenge. Their journey through Roo’s accident and her lengthy hospitalization is a powerful one, and their bond ultimately allows the novel to end on a positive, uplifting note. But I was left with the haunting certainty that Tilly has been made the scapegoat for a tragedy that was not her doing. And that part just didn’t ring true.

The Good, and The Not So Good
By LAURI CRUMLEY COATES
Rice wrote this book for YAs, and they will find it interesting. The writing is fairly well done, and the story moves along well. However, I lowered my rating because I felt something was lacking in the ending. The lessons are good ones for all of us to learn....the dangers of texting (and reading texts) while driving. When a younger sister texts her older sister while the older is driving, the older answers the text while driving....and ends up in a serious accident. The problem I have is that no one tells the younger sister that this is not her fault.....and that's a shame. The older sister, of course, should have pulled over to answer, or not even read the text while driving to begin with. When we send a text, we believe that the person receiving it will act responsibly and not be careless. This just wasn't made a major point, and it should have been.

could have been a good book, if it weren't for one major flaw (spoiler alert)
By dinglefest
This book is about two sisters in the aftermath of a couple tragedies. Before the book begins, their father has died, and shortly into the story, Tailly texts Roo and, while reading and responding to Tilly's text, Roo crashes her car. Told from each of their perspectives, including Roo's while she is assumed unconscious but actually isn't, this is meant to be a story of sisterhood, redemption, and reconciliation.

BUT.

Tilly is blamed by Roo's best friend and then her mother and then her school and then the media for being the one who caused the accident. Say what?!? She sent a text. Roo didn't have to read it. Roo didn't have to respond. Roo wasn't forced to be a distracted driver. She chose that. The book could have been so much better if it didn't continually shame a character who didn't deserve that. If just Roo's friend had blamed Tilly, that would have been acceptable and maybe made sense. But the confirmation of that again and again by people who should have been saying, "No, this isn't your fault. Please don't blame yourself. Roo made her own choice," was just too much.

Around the world in 25 stories
By Michael J. Mazza
"Other Voices, Other Vistas," edited by Barbara H. Solomon, is a wonderful anthology of stories. The selections in the book are grouped by geographic region into 5 sections, each containing 5 stories. The regions represented are Africa, China, India, Japan, and Latin America. In her introduction, Solomon notes that all of the stories are written by major authors who had published fiction after World War II.
The group of 25 authors is full of noteworthy names: Chinua Achebe, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Jorge Luis Borges, and more. The themes in the anthology include love, marriage, parenthood, oppressive governments, art, religion, economic struggle, ideological conflict, and cultural dislocation. The modes range from fantasy to stark reality--there is violence and serenity, beauty and grotesqueness, sorrow and humor.
I especially loved the Chinese stories, which give a vivid portrayal of life under the Communist regime--it's like a real life dystopia. Other strong selections include Yukio Mishima's "Acts of Worship," about a professor's pilgrimage; Isabel Allende's "Clarisa," a colorful character study; and R.K. Narayan's "A Horse and Two Goats," a story of cross-cultural miscommunication. Overall, I would recommend this book both as a classroom text and for individual reading. Recommended companion text: "Caribbean New Wave," a short story anthology edited by Stewart Brown.

Worthwhile
By Reader in Tokyo
This book was published in 1992 and contained 25 short stories, five each from Sub-Saharan Africa, China, India, Japan and Latin America. Most of the works were written or published in the 1970s and 80s, except the stories for Japan, all but one of which came out originally in the 1950s and 60s.

The stories were chosen to showcase major writers from these regions who published after World War II, and whose work was already available in English translation. The compiler was attracted, firstly, to stories that provided insight into the values, pressures, behavior and conflicts of people from other cultures. ("What does it feel like to grow up in Beijing, Bombay, or Buenos Aires? Increasingly, we have become fascinated by the details of daily existence in other cultures and curious about the lives of those whose circumstances and pressures seem so different from our own.") And secondly, to works that transcended individual situations and locations to touch on the shared human condition.

Themes in the stories included relationships between family members, men and women, different social or racial groups in a particular society, and artists and society, and the struggle to find a job or overcome poverty, civil strife, repression or imprisonment. The stories from China showed the impact of the Cultural Revolution: three of them contained main characters either banished to the countryside or imprisoned because of it.

Each region was represented by just five stories, and the quality overall seemed fairly high, even though it was difficult to get more than a glimpse of "what it feels like" in each place. Works that succeeded particularly in communicating atmosphere were, in my opinion, "Civil Peace" by Achebe, about a family struggling to survive the aftermath of civil war; "Africa Emergent" by Gordimer, about the relations between a black artist and a white architect during the time of apartheid and the resulting psychological tensions; "The Destination," by Wang Anyi, about a man returning to Shanghai after years of internal exile; and "The Man from a Peddlers' Family" by Lu Wenfu, about a political cadre's acquaintance with a peddler over many years, through the political shifts in their society, conveyed particularly well in their remarks to each other.

Others included a tale by Kushwant Singh about an Indian civil servant who'd been so Anglicized he could no longer follow his society's customs; "Papito's Story" by Luisa Valenzuela, in which a neighbor observed passively an incident during the period of military rule in Argentina; Sawako Ariyoshi's "The Tomoshibi," about the inhabitants of a cozy little bar in a Tokyo backstreet; and Yuko Tsushima's "The Silent Traders," about a woman's memories of a particular neighborhood at various stages of her life. The stories set in Japan, though, felt several generations out of date at the least.

It's too bad that a multicultural anthology such as this one, published more than a year after the Gulf War, omitted the Arab world. Major Arab writers whose works were available in English translation before this book was published included 1988 Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz, Yusuf Idris, Alifa Rifaat, Ghassan Kanafani, Zakaria Tamer and Mohamed Choukri. I also wondered why Japan was included instead, since it should've already been comparatively familiar to Americans as a fully industrialized U.S. ally.

The book provided useful lists of fiction anthologies for each region and informed biographies for each author. Though it's a minor point, in the table of contents in the China section the five authors weren't alphabetized correctly (the first author's surname should be Wang, not Anyi, for example), and their stories should've been reordered.

Readers who enjoyed this book might also enjoy Global Cultures: A Transnational Short Fiction Reader, a multicultural anthology of some 60 short stories that was published in 1994.

Many Cultures, One Humanity
By R. Curbelo
The more you read about other cultures, the more you realize how similar we are beneath the surface. "Other Voices, Other Vistas" is a collection of stories that celebrates our differences while bringing us closer together. Some of the more insightful and poignant stories include:
India: "The Interview" by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
India: "A Horse and Two Goats" by R.K. Narayan
Africa: "The Collector of Treasures" by Bessie Head
Africa: "Who Will Stop the Dark?" by Charles Mungoshi
Latin America: "Book of Sand" by Jorge Luis Borges
China: "Sketches from the 'Cattle Shed'" by Ding Ling
China: "Kite Streamers" by Wang Meng
China: "Regarding the Problem of Newborn Piglets in Winter" by Chen Rong
But my absolute favorite story in the entire collection is, without a doubt (drum roll, please):
Japan: "The Magic Chalk" by Kobo Abe.
For my money, "The Magic Chalk" is worth the price of the book. It is a witty, magical tale invoking the apocalyptic outlook of a post Hiroshima/Nagasaki Japan. Should be required reading.

Values Clarification: A Handbook of Practical Strategies for Teachers and Students, by Sidney B. Simon, Leland W. Howe, Howard Kirschenbau

The object of the values clarification strategy is not to teach specific values, but to make students aware of their own personally held values and of the way in which their values compare to those of friends, adults, different groups in society, and even other societies in other times. It is hoped that, as this awareness increases, students will reconsider and perhaps modify poorly founded values while, at the same time, hold more confidently values which stand the test of review and comparison.

A useful handbook for teaching values to students
By A Customer
In this book , Simon et al offer over 70 different activities and written exercises designed to help people learn about values and explore their own values. Although it is ostensibly targeted to school-teachers, the strategies are useful for all ages. One very interesting aspect is that the book refrains from endorsing any particular values. Instead, the concept they have is that we need to treat students more as autonomous valuing beings that already have a fairly well defined system of values. A student's problem is not that he has no ideas about what is good/bad right/wrong. Rather he does know these things but is usually confused about his own beliefs. The activities are thought provoking and diverse.

By Gene Berg
This is my favorite for teaching young people on any topic from mathematics to relationships. What teachers want to teach is not just mathematics, but how to think - to analyze information, take it apart and put it back in a form that they can use it. This applies to all the advice they get from parents, teachers, coaches, and friends. How do they think for themselves, decide for themselves, and stay true to themselves and their values?

Great activities from a Great teacher
By john edward kidd
I studied under Dr. Simon. I know what a great teacher he is. I bought a used copy, and it is not in good shape. I wish I had bought new. In fact, I will.
I teach a religious class of 6th graders and needed this book to remind me of exciting activities related to one's own values. Dr. Simon is a master of motivation.and helping others make clear that which they value most.

The Asian Mediterranean: Port Cities and Trading Networks in China, Japan and Southeast Asia, 13th-21st Century, by Francois Gipouloux

This insightful book draws upon a wide range of disciplines - political economy, geography and international relations - to examine how Asia has returned to its central position in the world economy.

As in the case of the hosting of the Olympic games, it is cities rather than states which compete, whether as financial centers, logistical hubs or platforms for coordinating international subcontracting. Analyzing the historical precedents of the Mediterranean maritime republics, the Baltic Sea Hanseatic League and the South China Sea mercantile kingdoms, the book delineates the way stable economic and legal institutions were developed largely beyond the purview of, and at times in conflict with, the State. Discussing the strong link between history and contemporary economic situation, The Asian Mediterranean will appeal to academics, including post-graduates students, of economics, geography, history, regional studies and Asian studies.

Review
'This intensive monograph, The Asian Mediterranean, is a great synthesis of East-West Maritime worlds under emerging global world. Professor Gipouloux has combined historical studies on global maritime seas with regional economic studies on Asia. He also integrates historical interaction between maritime seas and coastal port cities by creating the imaginative geo-economical concept of the ''East Asian economic corridor'', running between Vladivostok and Singapore and locating China, Japan and Southeast Asia into this maritime area. To attain this goal, Professor Gipouloux globalises China through north-south, east-west and past-present combinations, using cross disciplinary approaches - political economy, geography and international relations - under wide historical perspectives. The Asian Mediterranean opens a new horizon to look into Asia from a global perspective and at the same time, reminds us of the connection beyond contrast between East and West.'
-Takeshi Hamashita, Tokyo University, Japan and Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China

'A fascinating analysis of the proposition that the start of the 21st century is witnessing the rapid rise in South East Asia of a new and powerful transnational economic zone, the Asian Mediterranean. It uses a wide range of historical and contemporary multidisciplinary sources to systematically explore how, why, and in what ways we can better interpret and understand this contemporary version of economic globalisation by looking back to the equivalent processes centred on the ports around the Mediterranean and the Baltic seas during late 16th century.'
- Peter Daniels, University of Birmingham, UK

'Francois Gipouloux has written a vast and comprehensive history of the Asian economic system. In the tradition of Braudel, he paints a picture that is detailed, full of insight, and essentially very long term. On the basis of an analysis of the old Mediterranean and Hanseatic economic networks, he surveys the pre-modern Asian system, bringing it up to date with studies of Yokohama, Hong Kong, Singapore and other Asian hubs. The culmination of many years work, Gipouloux throws light on a new China - a China no longer land based and inward looking but dependent on, and a power in, a maritime world.'
- Christopher Howe, University of London, UK

'Gipouloux's ground breaking study based on a long career as a scholar of Asia's past is a most original contribution to the study of globalization. Connecting past and present, the author has further developed the somewhat vague metaphor of an Asian Mediterranean into a well defined concept that can also be applied for analyzing contemporary affairs. While in the past the traditional Chinese and Japanese state systems were failing to formulate adequate answers, on a more informal level, the port cities were able to meet with the maritime challenges of the emerging modern world system. The author convincingly shows how also in the age of globalization, a string of coastal metropolises continues to be instrumental in opening up the Far Eastern economy to the global economy.'
--- Leonard Blusse, Leiden University, The Netherlands

Satisfy Stakeholders by Solving the Right Problems, in the Right Ways

In Beyond Requirements , Kent J. McDonald shows how applying analysis techniques with an agile mindset can radically transform analysis from merely “gathering and documenting requirements” to an important activity teams use to build shared understanding. First, McDonald discusses the unique agile mindset, reviews the key principles underlying it, and shows how these principles link to effective analysis. Next, he puts these principles to work in four wide-ranging and thought-provoking case studies. Finally, he drills down on a full set of techniques for effective agile analysis, using examples to show how, why, and when they work.

McDonald’s strategies will teach you how to understand stakeholders’ needs, identify the best solution for satisfying those needs, and build a shared understanding of your solution that persists throughout the product lifecycle. He also demonstrates how to iterate your analysis, taking advantage of what you learn throughout development, testing, and deployment so that you can continuously adapt, refine, and improve.

Whether you’re an analysis practitioner or you perform analysis tasks as a developer, manager, or tester, McDonald’s techniques will help your team consistently find and deliver better solutions.

Make no mistake - Beyond Requirements is valuable for entire agile team
By Mary Gorman
Make no mistake. Kent McDonald’s book Beyond Requirements: Analysis with an Agile Mindset is a valuable resource for the entire agile team. He makes it clear – it's the work of business analysis, not the title or role “business analyst” that is an essential ingredient for successful agile teams.

In the spirit of one of Kent’s agile guiding principles, “Simplify”, I’m using a mind map as a “barely sufficient approach” to share what and why I value Beyond Requirements: Analysis with an Agile Mindset. I encourage anyone involved in agile business analysis work to dip into Beyond Requirements. You are sure to find many ideas and techniques that will help you and your team do the vital work of agile analysis needed to deliver a valued product.

Fantastic overview of current practices and ideas
By Gojko
The most useful thing about this book is that it introduces pretty much all the currently popular ideas and practices for product management/business analysis applicable to iterative delivery. Each technique is explained within the context where it applies, with some nice tips on when to use it, when not to use it, and how to get the most out of it.

I'd recommend this book to anyone working in an agile or lean software process that needs to discover, analyse or document stakeholder needs. This includes product owners, but also delivery team members who want to improve their requirements analysis skills. People new to this field will find plenty of ways to get started, and experienced product managers will surely discover some interesting gems to try out.

A Useful Guide for Agile Teams
By Ellen Gottesdiener
Kent’s book is a useful guide for agile teams, and punctuates the importance of analysis in agile discovery and delivery. He provides an elegant set of principles, a useful set of techniques nicely organized in a Jogger-like format, and makes it real with four case studies. I particularly appreciate Kent’s emphasis on value and collaboration, the distinction between discovery and delivery, and the pithy and powerful summaries in each chapter entitled “If You Remember Nothing Else”. Get it, read it. Reference it. You’ll find Beyond Requirements a valuable guide in your agile work.

Lowriders in Space (Book 1), by Cathy Camper

Lupe Impala, El Chavo Flapjack, and Elirio Malaria love working with cars. You name it, they can fix it. But the team's favorite cars of all are lowriders—cars that hip and hop, dip and drop, go low and slow, bajito y suavecito. The stars align when a contest for the best car around offers a prize of a trunkful of cash—just what the team needs to open their own shop! ¡Ay chihuahua! What will it take to transform a junker into the best car in the universe? Striking, unparalleled art from debut illustrator Raul the Third recalls ballpoint-pen-and-Sharpie desk-drawn doodles, while the story is sketched with Spanish, inked with science facts, and colored with true friendship. With a glossary at the back to provide definitions for Spanish and science terms, this delightful book will educate and entertain in equal measure.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—Camper introduces readers to Lupe Impala, Flapjack Octopus, and Elirio Malaria, three friends who love working with cars and dream of having their own garage shop. One day they see an opportunity to achieve their goal—a car competition where the prize is a "carload of cash and a solid gold steering wheel." When they start working on a lowrider to prepare it for the competition, an out-of-this world journey begins. Through anthropomorphic characters, the author narrates a tale of friendship, teamwork, and the passion for lowriding. She incorporates astronomy to this adventure, providing readers the opportunity to familiarize with terms from both worlds. Raúl the Third's colored pencil-and-marker illustrations effectively depict images from the lowriding subculture, while including references from Mexican pop culture, such as the iconic comedian Cantiflas and Chespirito's El Chavo del Ocho. The way he alternates among full-page artwork, spreads, and non-rectangular panels works well with the story and strongly supports its visual understanding. However, although it is true that some Latinos code-switch in their conversation, the use of Spanish words didn't feel organic to the story. There is also inconsistency in the use of accents, and footnotes that point readers to phrases and word meanings are explained as "nonsense words in Spanish," when that's not necessarily the case. Lowriders in Space fills a gap of Latino graphic novels for kids, and its quirky characters and illustrations have the potential to engage children. Let's hope that future installments will have a more accurate and natural use of Spanish. A helpful glossary of astronomy and lowriding terms is appended.—Sujei Lugo, Somerville Public Library, MA

Interstellar Daydreams Come to Life in Pen and Ink.
By ASIC Engineer
Like a Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang taking place in the southwest US (or is it northwest Mexico). Upbeat fantastical humor and imagery. The colorful, high-energy drawings keep the fantasy alive and driving forward. There is no surprise at the end, but it doesn't matter, these are like the day dreams of every kid as they tighten the bolts on their bicycle or hammer together two boards in the basement. "What if I could make this thing fly..."

Seems at a level for older elementary school age to read themselves or younger elementary to have read to them. Or, jackpot, if your middle or high school-er to reads it to the younger kids of your posse. The spectacular drawing will keep even the youngest paying attention even if they don't understand all the words and ideas the first time through.

Kid readers will be cheering and will love the comics-style art
By Latinxs in Kid Lit
Look in the children’s section for graphic novels from the Latino perspective and you’ll find precious few choices. Look there for books about lowriders and your choices will be still slimmer. Here is Lowriders in Space, ready to fill both spots with a joyous, celebratory tale. You don’t need deep knowledge of the lowrider culture to appreciate this middle-grade graphic novel, brought to you by the author-illustrator team of Cathy Camper and Raúl the Third.

In the opening pages, we meet three animal characters with Spanish names, all of whom work for a car-repair shop. The shop is called Cartinflas, and this is just one of many playful allusions and verbal jokes in this book. (Cartinflas plays on the name of the famous Mexican comic actor, Cantinflas.) Lupe Impala, (a wolf) busts gender stereotypes as a female lead who knows her way around car engines. Her sidekicks, the octopus El Chavo Flapjack and the mosquito Elirio Malaria, each specialize in key aspects of automobile revamping in the lowrider style. Elirio’s fine-tip proboscis doubles as a paintbrush that turns out the sweetest racing stripes and airbrushed scenes you could imagine. El Chavo’s eight tentacles go to work washing, polishing and buffing cars to a high sheen.

The trio dream of going into business for themselves, but where will they find start-up money? A car competition with a hefty cash prize gives them hope, but there are tough challenges to meet. First, they must find a car to work their magic on. They settle for a rusty heap sitting on cinder blocks. Now for car parts. At an abandoned airplane factory, they pick up mini air compressors and a box of rocket equipment. After attaching the parts, they’re in for a surprise when Lupe cranks the engine and it launches the car into the stratosphere. High above the earth, the car gears down into bajito-y-suavecito mode, low and slow: this is the cruising speed that lets low riders see and be seen. While the transformed auto travels outer space, it takes on loads of flash and bling borrowed from stars, asteroids and others elements of the galactic realm.

There’s much to love in this kid-friendly graphic novel. The story arc follows a familiar trajectory: the protagonists meet every challenge successfully and win the sought-after prize. Kid readers will be cheering. But my hat’s off to Cathy Camper for elevating the storyline above the predictable. She does this through original settings and characters, including the lowrider car itself, and with the inventive twists of space travel and comical astronomy. Her text engages the ear with musical language that includes alliteration, onomatopoeia, and bursts of G-rated street slang in English, Spanish, and Spanglish.

Kids will eat up the comics-style art. Every page offers levels of visual puns and charming details that invite readers to study panels closely. The color scheme and the drawings give off a retro historieta vibe, fitting for a story about lowrider culture, which was born in the 1950s and is rooted in the Mexican American community. I’m not familiar with the ballpoint-pen doodle style that Raúl the Third credits as his inspiration, but I dig it!

THE LEAD MECHANIC IS A WOMAN !!!
By Robin Leigh Morgan
The following review is my honest opinion for an ARC of this book I won in a giveaway on GoodReads.com

One of the reasons I decided to enter the drawing for this book is that the book is in reality a comic book. As any child of the 1950’s can recall, comics played a major part of what we read; as well as being something we’d used a part of our allowance each month for. Comics were broken down by sex; while the boys had their Superman, Batman, etc comics, the girls had their comics from the Archie series of comics: Archie, Jughead, and Betty and Veronica.

“Lowriders in Space” succeeded in bringing me back to those days of my youth, with it being a comic with a more adult storyline. I found the book interesting because it dealt with two elements which are not usually found in literature. The first is the topic of the storyline, the building of a lowrider. Lowriders are unique to the Mexican¬-America culture of Southern California are personally modified cars, usually junkers, built to ride closer to the ground than regular car and had been made for cruising rather than for racing. These cars built by teams then get enter into competition for the glitziest, uniqueness, etc car.

The second element deals with women in non-traditional roles, and the one in this book is that of the lead mechanic of the team which built the winning entry for the competition the book deals with to win a carload of cash and a solid gold steering wheel. Not only did the car run after they were finished with it, it also wound up launching itself into outer space.

For its unique storyline which crosses genres and what I’d mentioned in the above, this book definitely deserved the 5 STARS I’m giving it.
