About the Author
Theodore Johnson has worked as a science educator for more than 17 years. During this time, he has taught students from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds as well as different levels of academic achievement. For the past 10 years, he has taught at Lowell High School in San Francisco, a high-achieving public school. Prior to moving to San Francisco, he taught in the Providence Public Schools (Rhode Island) where he helped plan and implement the district’s first science magnet high school, and contributed to a district-wide standards-based curriculum redesign. Mr. Johnson holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry (Tougaloo College), a M.Sc. in Biology (Brown University), and MA in Teaching (Brown University). Additionally, he completed a professional training in secondary school administration (Providence College) and has been certified as a school administrator as well as a biology, chemistry, and general science teacher in Rhode Island, California, and Connecticut. He has also worked on a variety of research projects in the fields of physical and organic chemistry, plant genetics, and immunology. Aside from drawing on his substantive scientific knowledge, the author has put his expertise in curriculum design and instruction his to work in developing this book. He applied a narrative approach based on central themes in biological systems and guided by the AP Biology curriculum framework. With an keen eye for the dark side of human nature, an amazing ear for dialogue, and a necessary sense of irony, Flannery O'Conner exposes the underside of life in the rural south of the United States. One of the powers in her writing lies in her ability to make the vulnerability of one into that of many; another is her mastery of shifting "control" from character to character, making the outcome uncertain. Sexual and racial attitudes, poverty and riches, adolescence, old age, and being thirty-four which "wasn't any age at all" are only some of the issues touched on in this collection. When Ruby has to walk up the "steeple steps...[that]...reared up" as she climbed to her fourth floor apartment, we feel her pain as she "gripped the banister rail fiercely and heaved herself up another step..." Uncovers the gross underbelly of the Southern mystique

The ten short stories in this 1955 collection by Flannery O'Connor expose a grotesque underbelly of the Southern mystique that go far beyond their seemingly simple surface plots. Ms. O'Connor has a flare for dialog as well as a primal understanding of the darkness in people's souls. All her characters have a relationship with God and she combines Christian imagery, an apocalyptic vision of life and a strong element of cruelty. And yet, there is a deeply human element that gives me the shivers because it exposes truths I'd rather not see.
I could tell from the very beginning of each story that something ominous was going to happen. I didn't know when, I didn't know how, and I didn't know exactly what it would be. Always, I was surprised. And yet, when I thought of it later, each story could have gone no other way. All of them had a sad or tragic ending, although some were more awful than others. What keeps the narrative exciting though is a way she has of suddenly disappearing the storyline and taking it up in another place, leaving just enough information to spark the imagination. Then, when I think I have it all figured out, things change again.
Ms. O'Connor writes in simple startling sentences. And most of the stories are no more than 20 or 30 pages long. I found it hard to read one story right after the other however. Each one was so thought provoking that, even though I felt a great deal of discomfort, I wanted to stay with each just a little bit longer. That's because they move much too fast and are too intriguing to stop. Later, when the initial shock of the story is over, is the time to work it out philosophically. And it is then that I could appreciate the mastery of her craft.
This is a truly fine book and I unquestionably give it a high recommendation. It is certainly not for everyone however. These stories haunt uncomfortably. But those willing to explore the dark side of human nature in this small work of art will love it.

Ten weird, surprising, tense, comical, and often unforgettable stories

A family on vacation encounters a cold-blooded gang, a gullible and naive housewife is struck by a mysterious (but hilariously common) "illness," a 104-year-old Civil War veteran is a featured guest at his 62-year-old daughter's high school graduation--each of O'Connor's stories portray characters in improbable, bizarre, and ultimately harrowing situations. These tales are weird, surprising, tense, comical, and often unforgettable--but what exactly do they all mean?

O'Connor was often frustrated by the sense that readers and reviewers misunderstood both the intents and the themes of her stories. In her first letter to a fan from Atlanta who became a frequent correspondent, she complained that "she was mighty tired of reading reviews that call 'A Good Man' brutal and sarcastic" and that "when I see these stories described as horror stories I am always amused because the reviewer has hold of the wrong horror."

I think she sells herself short with this assessment, however. Her stories are brutal, they certainly can be sarcastic--and the fact that readers confuse the horror is confirmation of the ambiguous and harrowing (and, yes, Gothic) underworld her characters inhabit. The reason her stories are classics of the form--and the ten stories in this collection are among the best I've ever read--is not only because they are creepy and grotesque, or because she is the master of the ominous set-up and the unexpected ending, but also because after you've found out what happened you'll probably lie awake wondering why it happened.

"Christian realism" was how O'Connor described her spiritual stance; "I write the way I do because (not though) I am a Catholic. . . . I am a Catholic peculiarly possessed of the modern consciousness." Decades of critics have argued over the theological underpinnings of her fiction, but an assessment by a fellow author named George Clay helped me make sense of her themes--and the author herself approvingly summarized his remarks in her own correspondence: "[Clay's] interesting comment was that the best of my work sounded like the Old Testament would sound if it were being written today--in as much (partly) as the character's relation is directly with God rather than with other people's." It's not hard to find the ghosts of Job, Ruth, Samson, Esther, Isaac, Daniel, and others in all of her stories.

Whether these echoes make for good theology will depend on the reader's own spiritual inclinations--but they certainly make good reading. My favorite piece in this collection is "Good Country People," probably O'Connor's most famous (excepting the title story). Describing a lonely woman with an artificial leg who is seduced by a traveling Bible salesman, the story veers into an inexplicable climax that is both devastating and melancholy. And those two words pretty much sum up any of the stories you'll find here.

Classic American Fiction Straight from the Bible Belt

The ten short stories in this collection are definitely masterpieces. Neither too long or too short, the stories suggest whole worlds, entire lives (and deaths) with just the right number of verbal brushstrokes. Never preachy or self-righteous, they are yet infused with a deep, complex spirituality that seems to consist of an eccentric and compelling hybrid of Roman Catholicism's quiet mysticism and Southern Protestantism's revivalism and rigor. That said, this is not "chicken soup for the soul"...pretty much every story has a dark edge, and in most of them the author gets you with this impending sense of dread that things are going to go to heck in a hand basket, the only question is how (this makes the book awfully hard to put down, by the way). And she has an incredible talent of capturing the rhythms and characteristic expressions of Southern English without too much Mark Twain twang. In short, this is hands down a classic of American literature.

About the Author
Nicholas Perricone, MD, FACN, is a board certified clinical and research dermatologist. A brilliant scholar, Dr. Perricone completed medical school in just 2 1/2 years, graduating at the head of his class. He completed his internship in Pediatrics at Yale Medical School and his Dermatology Residency at Ford Medical Center. Dr. Perricone is regarded as the father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Wrinkle Cure (Rodale Reach May 2000). Warner Books published the trade paper edition in May of 2001. It reached # 1 on both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times bestseller lists March 24, 2002 and remained there for four weeks. Close to one million copies are in print. Just pick one book

Actually, all of Dr. Perricone's books should have a 5 star rating, but please, don't waste your money buying all of his books like I did. I liked the first one so well that I bought all of his other books. I thought there'd be some updated info, maybe some new recipes. They are all basically the same book, some word for word, with different titles. One book is definitel worth the money though. You feel better and look better in as little as 3 or 4 days just by following the diet without the supplements. I'm a bit leery of the expensive supplements. His supplements seem overpriced. Maybe there really is a difference in quality, I don't know. If I'm going to shell out hundreds of dollars a month for supplements, they'd better make a BIG difference, and one that I can see and feel right away.

Ignore the weird-looking girl on the cover and read this book!

This book has some really sound advice in it. I followed most of the suggestions (only I just incorporated the advice into my current eating patterns, I did not follow the diet mentioned in the book), such as: eating good fats and protein with meals, taking a good multi-vitamin. I did not buy any of the expensive skin care products mentioned in the book, and I have seen good results.

Perricone Clear Skin delivers!

What I particularly like about this version of the Perricone Prescription lifestyle choice program is that it includes an extensive chapter on yoga instead of the high-sound sorts of jock/sports club ideas of getting and keeping fit. It seems to be essentially the same as the larger, more expensive volume with a concentration on what input directly does to outbreak and outcome all over the body, plus functioning of the brain. Buy it!

Exceelnt analysis of Value Management

I found this book to be a current look at value management and where it should be going. The authors have good insight on current practices and the evolution of value management. As this book is directed to the UK audience, it wasn't totally applicable to a US reader, but still was very well analyzed and written.

I just found out yesterday that I’m going to be attending North Hampton Hills International Academy for one week as part of a student exchange program!

Yes, I know. It’s a VERY prestigious school, known for its outstanding students, rigorous academics, chic uniforms, and beautiful campus that’s a twist between Hogwarts and a five-star luxury hotel!

Most students would give up their CELL PHONES for a chance to attend there.

So WHY am I totally FREAKING OUT?!!

Because it’s ALSO the school that a certain DRAMA QUEEN just transferred to !

Yes, it’s true! Unfortunately . . .


MACKENZIE HOLLISTER ATTENDS NORTH HAMPTON HILLS!

Calling her a mean girl is an understatement. She’s a RATTLESNAKE in lip gloss and hoop earrings and blond hair extensions. . . .



I have no idea why she HATES my GUTS!

But you’ll NEVER believe THIS!

According to the latest gossip (from her little sister, Amanda, to my little sister, Brianna), a few of the North Hampton Hills girls have actually been HATING on MacKenzie! . . .





THEY MADE FUN OF MACKENZIE BECAUSE OF THAT VIDEO WITH THE BUG IN HER HAIR!



AND WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE HER LIFE MISERABLE!

But all of this gets even STRANGER!

I saw MacKenzie a few days ago at the CupCakery, and she was hanging out with some of her new friends. PRETENDING to be . . . ME!

It was so BIZARRE, I almost flipped out! I wanted to rush down to the local POLICE STATION and scream . . .



Thanks to MacKenzie, my life is a never-ending DRAMAFEST!!

In just the past month or so, she has:

1. slammed me in the face with a dodgeball

2. stolen my diary

3. hacked into my newspaper advice column

4. accused me of cyberbullying her

AND

5. pretended to be ME.

Like, WHO does that?!!

Only a complete and utter . . .

SICKO!

After MacKenzie transferred, I was hoping I’d NEVER have to see her face again.

But NOOOO!!!

Next week I’ll be stuck attending North Hampton Hills with a spiteful, lip-gloss-addicted IDENTITY THIEF !

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let my BFFs, Chloe and Zoey, get assigned to that school too.

With them by my side, I can get through just about ANYTHING!

Including a PAINFULLY long, MISERABLE week with my WORST enemy!

Fast and easy read but awesome

I love these books. Whenever I need a break for a day or two of some other big book like harry potter I read these. I can finish them in like 1 hour or less. I know I seem like a dork for reading so much but I enjoy the adventures that books take me on. Just when you thought that Mackenzie was out of Nikki's life forever she comes back. Nikki's has to go to Mackenzie's school for a whole week so she doesn't have to go to summer school!!!!

If you like the Shopaholic series, you'll love the Little Lady

I really really like British books. I've read all the charming books by Miss Read, and all the books by Sophie Kinsella. I searched for a couple of months for some new chic-lit to read and tried a few that fell short of the expectations. Then I somehow came across Hester Browne. This book was so incredibly enjoyable. It was like reading the Shopaholic books but a tad better. And for me the most enjoyable part is that it was clean. It made for really enjoyable light reading.

I was looking for light reading and this fit the bill perfectly. The story takes place in England in modern times, and is about a young woman who gets let go from her job and starts a business called "The Little Lady Agency". She has a male best friend and housemate and another female friend from her past job. IN her business she accompanies single men to parties and special occasions that they are not comfortable attending single. She also helps men polish their manners and shop for clothing. Her father and her family put her down, except for her grandmother who is very supportive. I liked the fact that there was no foul language and no graphic sex. It is a book that anyone can read from 15 to 95.

When she loses her job due to a takeover, she goes to a former teacher who she has been told is running her own business. It turns out to be an escort service, when one of the clients expects much more than a dinner date she punched him and fled the restaurant.
Always being a good organizer, she decided to open an agency to help single men organize their wardrobes and lives.

A great help!

I decided to learn guitar at the young age of 70. I discovered Justin's site on the internet and have been working my way (slowly) through his beginner's course. I was frustrated at not being able to find good sheet music for the songs in his course. His book, Beginner's Songbook, is excellent. It gives you more help than any other source I have found. I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn to play the guitar.

Required supplement for any beginner

I am more of a fingerstyle guitarist so I prefer to devote more of my practice time on that rather than strumming. However, I don't want to neglect that skill or at least the ability to strum out some singalong tunes if the occasion calls for it.
Justin's Beginner's Songbook is the perfect tool to help me practice strumming patterns while learning some singalong tunes.

Contrary to some other reviewers of this book, I like the book's set-up. New chords are given at the beginning at each stage only. There isn't a section that gives you chord diagrams so it forces you to memorize chord diagrams as you progress through the book rather than rely on convenient chord diagrams above every lyric. It isn't a chord reference book so if you're looking for that, there are plenty of cheap ones on Amazon or even free on the internet.

The chord name is given above the words of the lyrics and on the corresponding page Justin gives his recommended strumming pattern as well as some tips and trivia. There are other chord strum-a-long books out there but most of them usually just give the chords and the lyrics and not much else. You definitely get a bit more with this book. That being said, if you are familiar with Justin's videos, there really isn't anything new in the book from what he says/does in his videos. So if you are looking for something new, you may be disappointed. I purchased this mainly because I am a visual learner and seeing strumming patterns and lyrics right in front of me makes learning a lot easier (as opposed to watching Justin's videos over and over again). If you have surpassed the beginner level in Justin's guitar course, I'd recommend skipping this.

The song selection is great! With 100 songs, there is something for everyone across every skill level. Artists like Taylor Swift, Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, Don MacLean, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash are represented in the selection.

I definitely recommend using this book with Justin's free online videos on YouTube or on his website as it gives the book's lessons more context.

I ordered this book through a third-party seller supposedly located in Indiana, USA. Dispatch was quick but it took a while to arrive because it actually was shipped from overseas. As of this writing, Amazon doesn't offer this title directly but don't let that stop you.

Highly recommended for beginners really looking to develop their skills and creativity.

Don't want to gush, but....

This songbook is most helpful as you take his online course, but I'm sure it would be helpful even if you aren't.
When you get a good teacher like Justin, you realize how many mediocre-or even bad ones you have had to endure.
The book has the lyrics and music (guitar chords) along with suggested strumming patterns. You also get his help online on his website, justinguitar.com, or on You tube. He plays the songs on video where you can play along with him.
I get the feeling that I have a personal teacher who cares, (he has a friendly manner) is organized, never patronizing, doesn't skip steps, and has had years of musical training and experience.
It probably doesn't hurt that he lives and works in one of the musical capitals of the world-London.
Some of the songs I didn't know such as Lennon's "Working Class Hero" and "Common People" by the Pulp. I enjoyed reading the lyrics which weren't the usual love songs. They tell an interesting story and have social significance. However, there are more "popular" songs too. Enough songs to keep you going and interested.
If a beginner like me without a good musical education, your musical terminology will improve as you start each song. For example,in the first songs you are introduced to the use of capos and what off-beats are.
The book is more than a book, it's a musical journey. One that is just right-not too easy-or too hard. You can do it, but you grow as you keep learning and trying.
There is a forum on his site where he answers questions and other learners share their experiences playing the songs. Also where he didn't play a song, I found a student of his playing the song on You tube, and it helped me a lot. Where else do you get a songbook and a free forum (a community of people like yourself) asking questions, sharing difficulties and getting advice from Justin and the other guitar learners?
